In a Mafia game, both the description of the character given to a player, and the ability of that character, are referred to as the player's 'role'. This is true when one is referring to both,. A game of mafia always involves several roles. Your role determines your abilities and restrictions in the game, and are usually accompanied by flavor (storyline) by the game's host. I saw tomins list of the All Stars set up roles. I decided to try and make the full list of roles we have used in the past, as well as some stipulations that can be added on top of those roles to change how they work. We'll start with the roles that the DM community uses in a game of standard mafia from 15-24 players, where there are only town power roles, no third party, and no mafia power roles.

Standard Town Roles

  • CopUsed with 16 or more players

A Cop is an information role that receives an alignment check during the night on a living player of their choosing. The check is giving to the player is commonly referred to as a green check for town and a red check for mafia. The Cop has one check per night.

  • Parity CopUsed with 15-17 players

A Parity Cop is an information role that receives a difference check during the night on two living players of their choosing. The player chosen on n0 returns without a check. The player chosen every night after that returns with a check of same or different than the player of the previous night. The Parity Cop gives one name per night.

  • MedicUsed with 16 or more players

A Medic is a saving role that chooses a player in the night to be saved from 1 Kill Power. Should the player chosen by the medic receive more than 1 Kill Power in that night, they will die anyway. The Medic has one save per night.

  • Nerfed MedicUsed with 15-17 players

A Nerfed Medic is a saving role that chooses a player in the night to be saved from 1 Kill Power. The player chosen cannot be the same player two nights in a row. Should the player chosen by the medic receive more than 1 Kill Power in that night, they will die anyway. The Medic has one save per night.

  • VigilanteVigi Used with 15 or more players

A Vigilante is a killing role that chooses a player in the night to have 1 Kill Power applied to them. This Kill Power will persist through the death of the Vigilante, should he die the same night he chooses to shoot. The Vigilante has one shot per game.

  • GunsmithUsed with 16 or more players

A Gunsmith is a killing role that can choose a player in the night to receive a gun to be shot during the day. This gun can be 'pocketed' and held through as many night phases as the player wishes. A Gunsmiths gunning of a player persists through death, should he die the night he gives a gun. The Gunsmith may give two guns per game, one per night.

Mafia Game Optional Roles

  • HypnotistHypno Used with 16 or more players

The Hypnotist is an information role that chooses a player during the night to reveal his/her own role at the start of the following day. The chosen player must announce his exact role within the first 10 seconds of the day, and must say it loud enough to be heard by the moderator. The Hypnos hypnotism does not persist through death, should he die that night. The Hypno has one hypnotism per game.

  • Innocent ChildInno Used with 20 or more players

An Innocent Child is an information role that is confirmed by the moderator at the beginning of Day 1 to be vanilla town.

Town Roles

  • Mortician

A Mortician is a town information role that chooses a dead player during the night and receives the exact role of that player. The Mortician gets two checks per game, once per night. Used fairly often in certain game types.

  • Bodyguard

A Bodyguard is a town saving role that chooses a living player to protect each night. Should the chosen player have 1 Kill Power placed on him, the Bodyguard will die instead. If two or more Kill Power is placed on the chosen player, they are only saved from the first one. Variants include a Bodyguard having a 50/50 chance to kill the person placing the KP instead. While not a common role in DM, it is used frequently on EM and mentioned quite often.

  • Miller

A Miller is a town role that appears as mafia to cops and as vanilla town to themself. If role flips are in play, Miller will flip as mafia upon being lynched and flip as miller upon being killed in the night. While not a common role in DM, it is used frequently on EM and mentioned quite often.

  • Bulletproof

A Bulletproof is a town role that has a vest at the start of the game. Vest will prevent 1 Kill Power. While not a common role in DM, it is used frequently on EM and mentioned quite often.

  • Hunter

A Hunter is a town killing role that may shoot a gun immediately after being lynched. Used fairly often in certain game types.

  • Governor

A Governor is a town role that can override a lynch once per game. Common variants include the Formal Swapperino. The Governor and its variants are used fairly often in certain game types.

  • Mason

A Mason is a town role that may choose to visit one living player each night. If the chosen player is town, that member of town becomes a Mason. If the chosen player is mafia or Serial Killer, all Masons who visit any player, die. If the chosen player is a Cultist, the chosen player dies. Used fairly often in certain game types.

  • Templar

A Templar is a town role that shares a meeting each night with all other living Templars. While not a common role in DM, it is used frequently on EM and has been used before, but rarely mentioned.

  • Samurai

A Samurai is a town killing role that on a night of the players choosing may attempt to go on a killing spree by choosing a living player. If the chosen player is mafia, the Samurai chooses another player. If the chosen player is a town or third party, the Samurai kills himself and the chosen player, ending his killing spree. Used more and more frequently in recent months.

Mafia Game Rules Large Group

  • Jailer

A Jailer is a town role that chooses a player each night. The chosen player is roleblocked and protected from any and all night actions. Used fairly often in certain game types.

  • Party Host

A Party Host is a town role that once per game during the day, can choose to host a party the following night. During that night phase, all players in the game must leave their cameras on while performing night actions. Certain variants of the Party Host have a time limit on the length of the party. Should the party end before all night actions are submitted, those who do not submit their actions must forfeit them. Used fairly often in certain game types.

  • Virgin

A Virgin is a town role that should the player be lynched, will cause no kills to occur the following night. If the Virgin is visited by a Hooker, the Virgin becomes vanilla town. While not a common role in DM, it is used frequently on EM and mentioned quite often.

  • Oracle

An Oracle is a town information role that chooses 1 living player each night.
